Roller Coaster

I’m Up
……….I’m Down
I’m Up
……….I’m Down
I’m Up…

Finally got an appointment with my PCP this afternoon, had a heart-to-heart with him and…

He wrote the reorders for my PAP meds!  For my Tarceva, Zolinza, Zometa and Xeloda!

I can breath a little easier for a while cuz I don’t have to worry about coming up with the extra $1,500 “Medication Maintenance” for Burzynski Clinic to write the reorders, instead I can focus on other things I need to deal with.

I’m no longer bent over the barrel

I’m Up

I know there’ll be more to come
but for now
for now
for right now…

I can enjoy the coast.

Financial Assistance Stresses

The stresses of trying to acquire Financial Assistance are taking their tolls on me.  I’m not sleeping well – laying awake as images of withheld prescriptions run though my mind.  If I get 2 hours of sleep a night, I’m lucky.  I’m running on empty and am afraid I’m not going to be able to keep it up much longer.

If the cancer doesn’t kill me, all this stress just might…

If you can’t pay, you don’t get the meds, don’t get the Hope.  Hope for a new path, a more humane path… It’s a harsh reality.

Chemo might suck, but at least it’s “affordable”, financially anyway.  Though the toll it takes on the body is priceless – and not in a “priceless - you win” way.  More of a “priceless - killing you slowly and not knowing what future side effects you may experience while not promising that the cancer will not reoccur after you’ve gone through this hell” kinda way.

Getting the Gene Therapy meds directly from the manufacturer eliminates a great deal of cost and stress from my life. And, truthfully – 2 out of 4 is not bad.  But Honestly, I was Hoping to get assistance for all 4.  It would be different if I had insurance, if I Had the money to afford to stay alive – I’m simply doing the best I can to stay alive.  I Want to stay alive.

There is no financial assistance, though, for the PB prescription – that’s a flat $4500/month and is manufactured by the Burzynski-associated pharmacy, and is a proprietary formula.  So, even if I was able to get assistance for a generic brand PB, it would not be the formulation that offered the Burzynski “magic potion”.

And I Want The Magic Potion.  At least Dr. Deleon says it’s in the PB that I’m getting… Those antineoplastons.

ACT Program – Emend

There are many Patient Assistance Programs out there to help people like me, who don’t have health insurance, with the cost of medications.

One of these programs is Emend ACT = Accessing Coverage Today and it helps with the anti-nausea drug, Emend, that I’m supposed to take right before my chemo infusion, and the 2 days following each infusion.

Taking Emend.

How Emend works.

I can’t even imagine what people who took chemo before Emend had to endure, cuz even with Emend, it was really difficult for me…

Neulasta and the Safety Net

Neulasta is the “magic potion” after chemo.

The Neulasta will stimulate the growth of healthy white blood cells that the chemo kills off… the “potion” to help me to recover quicker.

How this drug works:
Colony-Stimulating Factors:
In the body’s bone marrow (the soft, sponge-like material found inside bones) blood cells are produced.  There are three major types of blood cells; white blood cells, which fight infection; red blood cells, which carry oxygen to and remove waste products from organs and tissues; and platelets, which enable the blood to clot.  Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy can effect these cells which put a person at risk for developing infections, anemia and bleeding problems.  Colony-stimulating factors are substances that stimulate the production of blood cells and promote their ability to function.   They do not directly affect tumors but through their role in stimulating blood cells they can be helpful as support of the persons immune system during cancer treatment.

Pegfilgrastim is a growth factor that stimulates the production, maturation and activation of neutrophils.  Pegfilgrastim also stimulates the release of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) from the bone marrow.  In patients receiving chemotherapy, pegfilgrastim can accelerate the recovery of neutrophils, reducing the neutropenic phase (the time in which people are susceptible to infections).  Pegfilgrastim is a long-acting version of filgrastim.

Pegfilgrastim is filgrastim with a substance called polyethylene glycol (PEG) attached to it.  The attachment process is called pegylation, and is used to allow active substances (the filgrastim) to stay in the body longer before they are broken down and eliminated.

Neulasta is also Very Expensive.  If you don’t have insurance, you will be struggling, but it is something You NEED If You Are Undergoing Chemo.

Depending on where you buy your dosage from, the cost of Neulasta is between $3000 and $7000.00 per syringe

If you read the following Breast Cancer Forum, you’ll see costs ranging from $1,800.00 to $12,150.00 Per Injection.
Topic: How much did your Neulasta shot cost?

I don’t have insurance.
At the Cancer Center, I heard $2,600.00 and I later heard $1,800.00.
Either way, I can’t afford that kind of money!
Per Injection!!
I can’t afford the Neulasta.
Can’t afford the “Magic Potion”.

Thank God that Mary at the Northwest Cancer Center found me a program -  The Safety Net Foundation, Medication Help for Low Income Americans Below Age 65

And Thank God I Qualified.

Now I’ll be able to get the Magic Potion!
