BOARDGAMING: December 2009 Party

It was a really nice Party. Was Great to spend time with my Friends and forget about my battle for a little bit.

“Gamesters” is the social-based boardgaming group that my Best Friend, Carol, and I started back in 2002 – as a response to the male-oriented gaming groups available at that time. Since then, boardgaming groups have become more common, and there are more options for the Ladies, Couples and Families. However, We Were the First In Houston to address those special needs! We have also held a monthly gaming event – a themed party with boardgaming. Some past themes include BBQ, Pizza Night, Mediterranean Night (complete with togas!), Foods You Love (for Valentine’s), Scary Foods (for Halloween, along with costumes!), Hawaiian Luau (Island Foods and Hawaiian garb), Mexican, Italian, Chinese… I could go on and on! The party theme is the choice of the Host, who supplies the main dish, and attendees bring complementing dishes. We have had some very fun themes picked over the years!

The December Party is our traditional Christmas / Holiday Party. It is (traditionally) held by Carol and Family. (Traditionally) the menu is “Breakfast for Dinner”, which means a menu of Breakfast items, and the requested attire is (traditionally) Family-Friendly PJs. I kinda followed my Halloween costume design, but instead of being a Deviled Egg, my outfit was the Spirit of Christmas Present. Yep, still trying to find that Spirit in me this year, and if I can’t find it naturally I am putting it on anyway.

Gamer Geek Blog Reader

So how Totally Cool is it to run into someone who has been reading your blog?  Someone that you don’t know…  Not Family, not Friend - a stranger who is reading!

This happened to me yesterday, at the Infusion Center, while getting my port-a-cath checked out.

I was waiting, and a Gal and (who I presumed was) her Hubby come in.  Turns out that Mrs. Gal is also a breast cancer Warrior.

Unwilling members of the club we are.

We talk a bit, the 3 of us.  About our treatments, about chemo, about my choice of Burzynski, about Sodium Phenylbutrate (aka PB).  Mrs. Gal is on PB for an unrelated medical condition – she takes 40 tabs per day when needed.  FOURTY TABS!  OMG! The 24 I take daily beat me down, just Beat.Me.Right.Down. I Can’t Even Imagine 40!  Maybe it doesn’t affect her like it does me… Maybe its different cuz of the different medical necessity? Or maybe she is in a whole heckuvalotta more than I am…

We continued to talk.  I got the impression she would have preferred not to, but she was unfortunate to be sitting close to me and I reach out to everyone.

My Bad Habit for those who are not so chatty.

 Anyway…

Maybe the nurse saw something and wanted to “rescue” Mrs. Gal , or maybe she didn’t like us talking about unconventional treatments, maybe it was something else entirely.  The nurse decides to place me in a “private room” for my port access.  Before I leave, I give my email to Hubby and tell Mrs. Gal that I am doing so, so that we can keep in touch.  Please keep in touch.

All goes well and as I am leaving

Mrs. Gal and Hubby are also leaving.

Hubby tells me that he has been reading about me.
Huh?

Yes, reading about me since June, but didn’t recognize me cuz my hair has been growing back.
Since June?
Huh?

Yes, he had read my Geeklist posting on BoardgameGeek (cuz boardgaming is my “passion”).

Wow – how Awesome!  I felt A Mile High on That one!

And they left.  I think her name was Elizabeth, but I didn’t ask his.  Wish I knew.

Y’all out there?

BOARDGAMING: BoardGameGeek and GeekList

I’ve always loved to play games. I find them to be a rewarding social activity.  I started with the typical childhood games – Sorry, Life, Monopoly, Scrabble… Good games at the time.

Then we moved on to Boggle – that was fun!

In the late 70′s I discovered a new type of boardgaming… electronic boardgames!  I purchased a copy of “Stop Thief” for $25 (which was a Huge game investment back then) and played this game until it just wore out…

My gaming interest was ~refreshed~ by Trivial Pursuit~ in the 1980′s.   Wow!  Intellectual gaming!  Got to put all my previously seemingly useless knowledge to use!

Back in 2001 I discovered the “Eurogaming” and a Whole New World opened up for me… boardgames that are More than the standard fare of American boardgames.  Eurogames are more than simple rolls of the dice or flips of the cards… Eurogames are experiences… the mechanics of strategy… of managing movement, action, development, trade, offensive, defense, co-operation and, often, deception…

I love Eurogames.  Especially now, they are an appreciated distraction.  They are so Much more than the standard fare of American games, which are typically more “party game” oriented. Though, the American game market Has rebounded a bit lately…

BoardGameGeek (aka BGG) is an Awesome resource for information on all areas of the gaming world.

One feature of BGG is the GeekList, which allows members to post items of interest, and others to add comments or content.

I’ve been a member of BGG for several years now, and a paying contributor for 3 years.  Mostly I’ve been a “lurker”, taking advantage of the info I find without much participation.  Today I posted my first GeekList – a montage of games to represent my story…

This was Joseph’s idea, and Rob took off with it, surprising me with a storyline of 40+ games.  I did some tweaking and completed the story.

Here is my GeekList – my story, BGG style.
